The Maca plant (scientific name Lepidium Meyenii ) grows at high altitude in the Andes in Peru and Bolivia, and has been traditionally used for centuries by local populations as a tonic and energy source. The friar Antonio Vásquez de Espinoza mentions its consumption by the Andean populations as early as 1598.
